How to Buy Antiques Online With More Confidence

1 min read · July 4, 2026

Buying antiques online is easier when you slow the decision down and check the evidence in the listing. Start with the object description before the price. Look for dimensions, materials, period, maker marks, condition notes, provenance, delivery requirements and a clear seller route.

A useful listing should explain what is known and what is not known. If the description uses a strong attribution, ask what supports it. If the photographs are limited, ask for additional images of the back, underside, marks, joints, labels, repairs, damage and scale. If the object is large, fragile or high value, confirm delivery before checkout rather than treating shipping as an afterthought.

Condition matters as much as age. Wear can be appropriate on an old object, but cracks, repairs, losses, later additions and unstable structure should be clearly stated. A condition report does not need to make a piece sound perfect. It should help you decide whether the object is right for your collection, budget and intended use.

Before committing, ask three questions: what evidence supports the description, what condition issues could change my decision, and what will happen after payment. A transparent seller should be able to answer those questions or explain why more review is needed.
