Online auctions have opened up the art and antiques world, but the mechanics can be off-putting the first time. Once you understand a handful of terms, bidding becomes straightforward — and often the most transparent way to buy.

How an online auction works

Each item is a lot, usually with a low–high estimate of what it is expected to fetch and, often, a reserve — a confidential minimum below which the seller will not sell. Bidding rises in set increments until the auction closes; the highest bid at or above the reserve wins at the hammer price. Timed auctions close at a stated time (with anti-sniping extensions if a late bid lands), while live auctions run in real time.

Understanding buyer’s premium

The single most important thing for a new bidder: the hammer price is not the final price. A buyer’s premium — a percentage added on top — is charged by almost every auction house. Always check the premium (and any applicable taxes or shipping) before you bid, so your maximum bid reflects the true total. Bidding with a clear head

Decide your maximum before you start, including the premium, and stick to it. Most platforms let you leave a maximum (proxy) bid — the system bids on your behalf up to your limit, so you do not have to watch every second. The commonest mistake is emotional bidding: chasing a lot past what it is worth to you. A reserve protects the seller; your discipline protects you.

What to check before you bid

Treat a lot like any considered purchase. Read the condition report closely, ask for extra images of marks, joints, repairs and the reverse, and review the provenance and authenticity evidence. Confirm your return and cancellation rights, and how delivery and insurance are arranged. If a piece is high value, a pre-bid question to the seller is always worth it.

After you win
